Matched Betting Extra Place Horse Racing - January 21 Profits - £4,707 on top of Full Time Job
Hi all, I thought I would share my profits for Matched Betting Extra Place Horse Racing for Jan 21. January 2021 has turned into my best month of Matched Betting since I started way back in Summer 2018. This months profits are roughly £4,707. A life changing figure for many and a great figure seeing this is achievable on top of a full time job. Matched Betting is the only decent side hustle I have actually found, compared to doing hundreds of boring online surveys...yuck! (Unless you are a good business person / have 5 lodgers / lots of family money etc.) To see some of my other Matched Betting profits you visit my site: https://cashontheside.co.uk/ I will be investing some of my profits this month in ETF/Shares and putting into house improvements like a new drive way. In addition with Cheltenham horse festival coming up in March, I will be increasing my bank to cover liabilities. The bulk of my profits came from Extra Place racing, large underlayed winners and BOG (best offer garuntee). Variance was certainly on my side this month and I must have had at least 10 large winners which won upwards of £1600 pounds per bet. As I underlay my bets I made more profit than If I had fully layed of the bets. About 5% of these profits came from low risk casino. After you have completed all welcome offers...in Matched Betting. Ep's become a gold mine...and I truly recommend them to anyone. Some more of my bets this month illustrating underlayed bets and ep: https://cashonthesidecouk.files.wordpress.com/2021/02/winnings4.jpg https://cashonthesidecouk.files.wordpress.com/2021/02/winnings.jpg https://cashonthesidecouk.files.wordpress.com/2021/02/another-winner.jpg Images of one of my bets illustrative of Best offer guarantee: https://cashonthesidecouk.files.wordpress.com/2021/01/136707133_10159536662702922_8507610622687908137_o-1.jpg?w=544 For those who are starting out on their Match Betting journey in 2021 these sort of figures are achievable to you once you have experience….unfortunately this will not come overnight! I do put a lot of time into it..between 2-5 hours a day, 7 days a week sometimes. For the average person you could earn at least £500 a month. (non affiliate) To those with a little more experience who want to learn about Matched Betting Extra Places you can visit my guide here Extra Place Match Betting tips hereor I have copied and pasted it all below. For those with Matched Betting Experience - my guide and tips to Extra Places: What is Extra Place Matched Betting? Extra Places can be a very lucrative technique to learn. Extra Places are available for us to do pretty much every day, increasing the appeal. Extra Place Offers are available to all customers. This means that even if you get gubbed with a bookmaker, in most cases, you can still make money with them by Matched Betting on their Extra Place Offers. Extra Places are considered an advanced reload offer, as they not risk-free. However once you have gained some experience on more basic horse racing offers, you can start to take advantage of the lucrative profits available. It may sound complicated but as soon as it ‘clicks’, it becomes simple. Essentially we are taking advantage of the bookies and exchanges paying out if the horse you have backed comes a certain ‘place’ in a race e.g. 4th. Extra Places combined with additional offers such as BOG (Best Offer Guarantee) can mean additional profits. For example, you back a horse at odds of 15 and then the starting odds move up to 23. If that horse wins you win an extra x8 on your bet. You can see some real life scenarios I found of Extra Place combined with BOG below. Depending on the size of the underlay, profits below would range up to £3,000+
What is a ‘place’ in horse racing?
Quite simply a ‘place’ is the position the horse finishes a race in. For example if a horse wins a race it comes 1st, if a horse comes 2nd its 2nd. In some races with a large number of horses some bookies will pay out if a horse finishes the race in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th position. Horse Racing festivals such as Cheltenham or Ascot are particularly well known for this.
What is an ‘Extra Place’ in horse racing?
Now we’ve understood what a place is in horse racing you may have probably already guessed what an ‘extra place’ is going to be! An ‘extra place’ is where the bookies add one (or more) additional places to their standard place classification on a particular race. For example they may offer to ‘pay 7 places on a race’ instead of the standard 3 places. The ‘extra place’ in this instance cover 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th. What are my Extra Place top tips?
Some of my biggest profits have come from big underlayed winners and BOG. I typically underlay most of my bets by about 20% sometimes more. If you are starting out I would underlay on the place only by about 10% to play it safe until you learn more.
Don’t bet on more places than a bookmaker is offering. E.g. If the bookmaker is offering 4 places don’t bet on more than that.
Whilst your learning, take horses on implied odds of at least 12 or more on a match of 80%+.
Look to keep qualifying losses down. E.g. for £100 profit, £5 ql.
Please note, the best odds are typically found between 10 minutes up and to race time. You have to be quick on your ‘toes’…learn to walk before you run etc. Start out on easy horse racing officers before doing extra places.
You will need a bank of at least £1000+ for your exchanges, ideally more. The more you have the more of the field you can cover. You can do EP with several hundred in your exchange but you won’t be able to make bigger profits.
Be consistent, don’t take risks, don’t chase your losses and learn from matched betting extra place forums.
Keep the Odds Monkey up throughout the day...and check for good matches.
Use Bookies Boosts to increase your odds and matches.
Do not give in to your fear of missing out on offers…Tomorrow is another day.
Have at least a dual monitoscreen setup. It is important to be able to see exchange, books and calcs.
How do I find Extra Places offers? I use the the Odds Monkey Extra Place Matcher to find the best opportunities for profit. The Unfortunate Story of Western United (Season 1, Part 4): A debut to build from

Today we will go over how the rest of the first season went, stats on the season, player transfers, youth academy progress, and thoughts for next season. Second half of the season Rolling into 2020, the league was our only competition to worry about, and we were determined to put forth as much energy as we could. Backs to the wall, we were set to keep our momentum for playoff contention going. No loans were brought in, mostly due to not being able to spend any more on wages, but also because Horvat was confident in the squad as it was. Our first fixture of the calendar year, however, was unfortunately one to forget. 2-1 up against Cheltenham Town, our 16-year-old keeper White made a grave mistake trying to clear the ball in the 90th minute, resulting in Cheltenham chipping in a heart-breaker. Even though we still came away with a point, this match would prove pivotal for the rest of our season as it set us up for a win-less January. We managed to pull back a bit in February and March, but a McGlinchey injury and an overall lack of tactical focus pretty much cemented our status as a mid-table team. We fought valiantly as March turned to April, but the season would conclude for us with no playoffs. (Bitterly, we lost our second fixture to Salford City as they pulled off a 2-1 comeback similar to ours against them earlier in the season; they would end up winning the playoffs as well.) Colchester won the league with 98 points; Bradford City were runners-up with 91 Capitalizing on chances was our biggest weakness this season. During the start of the season, noticing how stalwart we were in defense, we doubled down on it, anchoring too much on it in fact. We were among the worst attacking teams in the league, despite our top half finish. Upon learning from various formations and tactics, Horvat realized (a bit too late) that putting forth our energy towards the attack would be more worthwhile. And indeed, as the season was coming to a halt we did experience a bit of an offensive awakening, with Connolly really coming into form nicely, Sheppard continuing to poach, and Sotirio exceeding expectations on the right side. In terms of tactics, the 4-3-3 holding was what we started the season with, but that proved to not be worthwhile given a lack of support behind the striker. Experimentation with the 5-3-2 resulted in similar problems. Three-at-the-back formations (3-1-4-2 and 3-5-2) were also tested, but defense suffered too much with those, as well as wing presence. Our trademark defense had to be maintained, but offensive prowess needed to improve as well. For the last few games of the season, Horvat tested the 4-4-1-1 attack with Connolly playing behind Sheppard/Athiu, and it's looking like this will be the formation utilized moving forward into the second season (if a 3-0 win to conclude the season against Northampton is any indication). The 4-4-1-1 will most likely prove more effective than, for example, the 4-2-3-1, given the team's tendency to prefer true CMs over CDMs and Connolly's preference to play in the CF role. Melling was one of our best players this season anchoring the 4-3-3, so let's hope he's able to continue his dominance in a 4-4-1-1 midfield. Many ups and downs resulted in a somewhat middling finish for Western United, but we still exceeded expectations nonetheless. To come from Australia with a team of previously no cohesion into League Two was daunting as is, and odds-makers would have never guessed this squad would finish top half. This season was a very important one, one to build and learn from. Season stats Here is the spreadsheet of each player's stats on the season across all competitions. (Jacob Tratt's exact numbers couldn't be provided as he was released due to contract and squad role disagreements before his stats could be properly collected.) https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1fvNb73R0I9U2xAUaYhm3BrWaFLV4w4YkF0vBFNtXznA/edit?usp=sharing Our top goalscorers were unsurprisingly Connolly and Sheppard, with the latter along with The Konstant leading in assists. Player maneuvers Iannucci was loaned out to Stevenage starting in July of 2020, where he will hopefully find more game time. In addition, Tratt was obviously released, and Italiano (despite performing on par with White) was not renewed on his contract, so he walked into free agency. Our reserve goalkeeper Ochsenham was the only player not to see a single appearance for the squad, so he was sold for £100,000 to ŁKS Łódź. Lastly, our starting center back Dino Djulbic retired at the end of the season at the age of 37. Horvat has heard word from players that in honor of Djulbic being the first Western United retiree in the club's history that all youth academy products will follow in his trademark image of leaving the shirt tucked in during matches. Our two pre-contract players coming in look clean in the black and green! Nathan McGinley Sam Hoskins Youth academy progress Now that the squad has been thinned a bit, it's finally time to recruit some youth players besides White. Isaac Morris Isaac Morris was the first true academy standout after White. He spent the majority of the season growing in the academy, priming to play a role for next season. He will more or less take on Tratt's former role on the bench for the time being. His work ethic is much appreciated for his position, and his physicality will undoubtedly stress more than a few forwards in the future. Will Collins Will Collins appeared late in the season, but showed very promising potential from the onset. Demanding a spot with the senior team, he was granted it, but not without skepticism from Horvat due to his undesirable work rates. We shall see if he lives up to his own hype. George Roberts George Roberts spent a similar amount of time in the academy as Morris did, and will be tasked with backing up White for the time being. While his positioning is subpar, he will prove a solid and economical second choice. Interestingly, he appeared with a trait as he came out of the academy: https://preview.redd.it/c6sloit65k351.jpg?width=786&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d7506f9ff97aa4fd29dacdc3e0392cd911a88772 Isn't that something! Offers were immediately blocked for him, so hopefully he stays with the club for as long as he can. Thoughts for next season Now that we have re-established sufficient depth in the center back position as well as ironed out our goalkeeper situation, we could take solace in the solidity of our middle defense. Our depth on the wings has also been improved upon; Hoskins will take over on the left while Sotirio will continue on the right, with Fitzgerald and occasionally Ingham appearing as substitutes. Our left back situation is solid, with Kitto being serviceable enough and Scott being an underrated backup. However, Rasmussen's loan has now expired, leaving Galloway as the only right back in the squad going into the summer. Our central midfield has sufficient depth, with Konstandopoulos and Melling planning to lead the pack that consists of the soon-to-retire McGlinchey, Mells, Zuvela, and Hope. Connolly will fulfill the CF role as the star of the team, but with no backup as of yet (in addition, his loan expires after next season). Then up top, Sheppard is a proven poacher with Athiu backing him up. However, neither really provide the pace or balance that Horvat desires. At the moment, the next steps for who to bring into the club are currently unknown. Given the aforementioned information though, it is our responsibility to try to piece together a team that looks to contend for not just the playoffs, but for automatic promotion. The board was quite happy with how last season went, and have proposed similarly-weighed objectives for next season. They've challenged us, though, with their only high-priority objective: We must make at least £2,700,000 in profit by the end of August, which is in only two months! How will we accomplish this goal, besides with preseason tournament earnings and (undesirably) player sales? https://preview.redd.it/tw2yjxs1ck351.jpg?width=844&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=987e69de81dc9260ebb96ebd77ea3b3e6832046b The second season of Western United's unfortunate story awaits. Thanks to all who have read this far! This concludes the season one finale of this Western United series. The next episode will introduce the second season and go over all activity from July through the end of August.

Horses that win the JLT tend to run to a performance level of 155 and bring in a performance level of about 150. They need to have already shown a good level of form while still having a small amount of improvement in them. Like the other novice races at this years’ festival, there are not many coming in here with the form usually required to win this, which makes the race seemingly lacking in quality but at least an interesting betting heat. The current 11/4 favourite is Defi Du Seuil, a Grade 1 winner who loves Cheltenham and is a solid proposition at the front of the market, but I do think he is beatable (and I say that as somebody who loves the horse - he was my desktop wallpaper for ages!). His Official Rating of 151 accurately rates him, but he probably doesn't have as much in hand over the field as such odds suggest. He hasn’t totally convinced me with his jumping, and though I would not doubt he’s got the biggest engine in here, a mistake could cost him this. Lostintranslation has faced Defi Du Seuil in two attempts, but he needed a soft lead and weight in order to beat him the first time. Though you have to respect these two, but I think they are first and second favourite by default and I would be surprised if the finish tomorrow is between these two. There seems to be a line of thought that Voix Du Reve is Ruby’s chosen ride, but the Arkle winner’s owners, Sullivan Bloodstock, seem to like keeping jockeys on horses. They let Paul Townend keep that ride on Tuesday, and I think they want to keep him on my fancy, Real Steel, here, so I think that Ruby couldn’t have got on him if he had wanted to! I do like Voix Du Reve, but he takes such a strong pull that it will take a brilliant ride for him to see out this trip. Real Steel has ‘only’ won a Beginners’ Chase and then a Rated Race, but both were good performances. The most recent of which he beat useful yardstick Landofhopeandglory (128) by 10 lengths and giving him 15 lbs, and did so with loads left in the tank, which should put Real Steel in the region of being a 150-rated chaser and wouldn’t give him too much to find with the market leaders, for all they bring graded form. He’s a very sound jumper I think he has been trained to peak for Cheltenham and Punchestown and should have plenty of scope for improvement. Ideally he would be coming in here with graded form lines, but then if he did we wouldn’t be getting 6/1 (8.80 on Betfair).
Pertemps.
added 11:19am.
This is the kind of race I’m happy to have two running for me, the first of which is A Toi Phil. He was a smart horse over fences, beating last year’s Ryanair winner Balko Des Flos in achieving Grade 2 success despite that horse having his ground and perfect conditions. He has posted a number of very smart figures in terms of Timeform Ratings and on the clock. At his best, he would comfortably be the best of this field, especially from a lenient mark of 146 - only two lbs above his qualifying mark for this race in Ireland. He has only ran over hurdles once for Gordon Elliott, which got him into this race, but he looked at home back over the smaller obstacles when running an eye-catching fourth place, despite late interference, carrying top weight and being held out the back of a slowly ran race - to make up the ground he did despite a 105% finishing speed suggests he’s in good order. He’ll like the rain that’s falling and I would trust Gordon to have him primed for this. I’m very happy to take 22/1. The second horse I like is also trained is Thermistocles for Joseph O’Brien. I’ve seen one or two suggestions that he might want better ground than what he should be racing on today (soft, most likely), but he’s by Oscar, trained in Ireland and finished 3rd on heavy ground in a Maiden hurdle when giving three lbs for a three length loss to future Grade 1 winner Dortmund Park last season, so I don’t see the ground as being an issue. The key trial for this race seems to be the qualifier ran on 28th December at Leopardstown, in which Thermistocles finished a good 3rd. The winner, Cuneo, was good value for the win that day and looked a little green in front, but Joseph’s horse is now two lbs better off which means he’s weighted to turn that result around, and by racing more prominently than the eventual winner he was less ideally placed in a race ran at a very strong pace (97.3% finishing speed). He has been put away since then, and as we saw yesterday his trainer can get one ready for the festival. We know he gets this trip, and he is entitled to want every yard of it and further based on his pedigree. He’s a young, still improving horse and has the right profile for this. 14/1 is fair.
Ryanair.
added 12:00pm.
Horses who win the Ryanair typically only need to run to their best in order to do so. The money is coming for Road To Respect and Monalee, but I think the former might be a good ground horse and better over further, and the latter just doesn’t strike me as a proper Grade 1 animal having done nothing of note on the clock nor looking as though he is capable of much more than he has done. If we take each horse in this field at their best form these days, I think Footpad is the one to be on. He hasn’t shown his best in two runs this season, but there are mitigating circumstances for both and I believe that he would not be coming here and be the choice of Ruby Walsh unless he was ready to do so (Footpad’s owners could easily have re-routed Top Notch to this). There has been criticism of Footpad’s novice form, particularly the horses he was beating, but he put up Timeform Ratings of 147, 158, 166, 172, 160, with the middle three of those clocking time-figures that were even better than the given form rating. He might not have beaten anything of note, but he never looked in danger of losing any of those races and won them by a combined 53 lengths. He stays this far, is versatile in terms of ground and jumps really well. I would have him as clear favourite and 7lbs clear of Road To Respect, so I’m more than happy to see him as 9/2 third favourite!
Stayers’.
added 13:00pm.
I think that, like the JLT market, it’s somewhat blinkered into thinking this is a two-horse race between Faugheen and Paisley Park. At their best it would be, but Faugheen is now 11 and Paisley Park has had a long season, the rain might not be ideal for him and I think the market hasn’t factored in how important the trainers are at the Cheltenham Festival. His price of 7/4 is what I would take were he trained by Mullins or Henderson. Emma Lavelle is a good trainer, but there will be doubts she can deliver one in a Championship race until she actually has. The one I like against these is Bapaume. He has quietly been running some really good races this season against the best horses in Ireland, in races not run to suit him. He is a hold up horse who tends to be ridden very quietly, if not last, and who is often one of the last off the bridle. He was running a screamer on his seasonal reappearance in the Hatton’s Grace, which Apple’s Jade won by 20 lengths. He was held up off a less-than-even pace, and came into contention for 2nd place absolutely tanking before a mistake at the last hurdle cost him all of his momentum. It was then a similar story in the farcical Christmas Hurdle in which Apple’s Jade was allowed a very soft lead and allowed to storm home at a 113% finishing speed. This did not suit Bapaume, who was again held up off the pace and again made a mistake at the last to concede second place. In his next run, though, again run slowly at 108% finishing speed, Bapaume managed to grab second place, only held off by Gold Cup contender Presenting Percy. Unlike the three races he has contested in the run up, this race should have a really solid pace to it with Faugheen, Sam Spinner and Coquin Mans all ready to go forward. He’s only six-years-old, so is still developing and I think he is on the sort of upward curve required to run really well in this. He will need to take a big step forward again to challenge Paisley Park and Faugheen if they are both at their best, but he doesn’t deserve to be behind Supasundae, Black Op, Barcadys, Kilbricken Storm and Top Notch in the betting! 20/1 is just too big a price to ignore. More to follow later this evening.
Education and its Benefits to Society – Why it is Important to Educate the People
An All-Round Education is a procedure of self-completion and discovering that consolidates a person's psychological, physical, social, enthusiastic and profound development. Keeping this vision unblemished, our school in Yamunanagar executes all-encompassing lessons in our understudies' training so they can conquer difficulties in their lives alongside other scholarly subjects. In the previous decades, our insight in regards to youth advancement has extended, and with it our instructing systems. Today, guardians and teachers the same need more from their kids' instruction. They are searching for a way to deal with training that is in line with every kid's one of a kind needs and abilities, and one that readies the kid to turn into a balanced grown-up. In that capacity, an All-Round/Holistic training depends on the possibility that kids can be educated in an increasingly normal and connecting way. Instead of compartmentalizing the best school in Yamunanagar subjects, the all-encompassing methodology tries to enable youngsters to utilize their scholarly learning as a solid footing for their enthusiastic and social advancement. The Benefits of All-Round Approach Instruction is never again pretty much learning unmistakable and quantifiable abilities. Our past instructive ideal models depended on the "normal" estimations and institutionalization. Youngsters were set up to remember data and afterwards take situation assessments. In spite of the fact that youngsters ought to be prepared in centre subjects, for example, arithmetic, writing, or science, it is likewise significant that they are instructed how to learn. All-encompassing training reclassifies what a centre subject is, yet it additionally rethinks how kids ought to be educated. The greatest advantage of a comprehensive methodology isn't just about mental advancement, yet it envelops mental, social and passionate development. An All-Round methodology persuades youngsters to find out about a subject. It imparts interest and enables youngsters to adapt normally and imaginatively. It is additionally sensitive to every kid's individual persona and learning style, conversely of the present mass instructive framework. Thus, kids grow better correspondence and social aptitudes, and better certainty. They like learning and testing themselves with specific subjects on the grounds that these things offer positive affiliations. Inborn inspiration, thus, moves them to be interested, curious, and in the end, be creative grown-ups in the working environment. This procedure looks to enable youngsters to build up the entirety of their aptitudes and to assemble their qualities. Thusly, this instructive methodology is slanted towards play-based learning, youngsters' inventiveness, and their creative mind. For example, a comprehensive educational program could incorporate move and stage execution, discourse, photography, or painting (to give some examples) notwithstanding the "conventional" subjects. All the more critically, an all-encompassing methodology would urge youngsters to make associations between subjects-for example, utilizing their inventive aptitudes to settle a functional science or social issue, or moving toward an unknown dialect like the manner in which they approach a numerical condition. To finish up an All-Round Education is Fun and Meaningful. The goal of all-encompassing training is to make adapting so fun and significant that the kid looks for it notwithstanding when he is out of the study hall and this keeps on energizing the youngster's journey for long-lasting learning and improvement. Things being what they are, what's being offered by life experience school in Yamunanagar. Every single great school in Yamunanagar ought to attempt to offer a progressively adjusted and complete training. That is the thing that the additional time we have with the students empowers us to do. A few best school in Yamunanagar might offer an alternate equalization in their educational program. An equalization where scholastic outcomes absolutely matter, yet with more extensive open doors for youngsters to be associated with life outside the homeroom. To be a piece of ensembles, symphonies, plays, sports visits and other extra-curricular gathering exercises is instruction the majority of its own. Guardians may likewise prefer to consider the benefits of a town versus grounds based school in Yamunanagar. I've worked in both, and both have their focal points. [Match Thread] Walsall vs Bristol City | Football League Trophy Final | Wembley Stadium
Plenty of big games today, but will you see a big shiny trophy won at Anfield or the Camp Nou? Nope! It's all about Bristol City vs Walsall! After the Liverpool vs Man Utd match and with the upcoming Real Madrid vs Barcelona fixture, what better way to top off the the ultimate day of football with a cup final at Wembley Stadium! If you've not seen any teams from the lower divisions of English football play before then this is the perfect opportunity for you to start, likely to be 80,000+ fans cheering on the two third-division sides of Bristol City and Walsall. Kick off is at 3:30 GMT, about 15 minutes from when this is posted. Pop along if you've got some time free, it's likely to be a cracker! Hull vs Chelsea is a foregone conclusion so this is the match to watch!
The Football League Trophy
Currently known as 'The Johnstone's Paint Trophy' or 'JPT' for sponsorship reasons, the Trophy is awarded to the winner of a 48 team knock-out competition composing solely of teams from the third and fourth division of English Football (Leagues One and Two). Holding it's inaugral competition in 1983, the Trophy is a fantastic opportunity for lower division sides to reach a cup final at the historic Wembley Stadium as well as offering more competitive knockout matches to teams that often struggle to far in competitions such as the FA Cup or League Cup. The draw for the first round this season took place all the way back on the 16th August 2014 so it's an extremely long road ahead for any teams wanting to reach the final. An important distinction from other English knockout cups is that the 48 teams are divided into geographical regions creating a 'Northern' and a 'Southern' section. This is to reduce travel time and costs for teams and fans that are further down the pyramid as all matches take place midweek. The two sections are separated until each is left with two teams. A two-legged 'area final' is contested in the North and the South with the winner of each booking their place at Wembley in the Trophy final. Since 2000, winners include Stoke City, Swansea City, Wigan Athletic, Blackpool and Southampton all of which went on to make multiple promotions to the Premier League. Most recently, Southampton won the competition in 2010 which kickstarted their double-promotion climb up the pyramid to the position they are in today. Peterborough United won the Trophy last season beating Chesterfield 3-1.
Bristol City
Bristol City are currently sitting in first place of League One 10 points ahead of second place Preston North End. On paper they were the best team in the competition and they've not fallen short yet. Starting in the Second Round with a win away at Cheltenham Town, the Robins have beaten AFC Wimbledon, Coventry City and then Gillingham in the two-legged area final to be at Wembley today. It's been nothing but a positive season for City who in their second season in League One are only a few games away from sealing automatic promotion back to the Championship. Only dropping two points from their last seven league matches, the Robins are in incredible form. A narrow loss to West Ham in the fourth round prevented an equally impressive FA Cup performance. Should Bristol City win this afternoon, they would make history becoming the first team to win three Football League Trophies after previous successes in 1986 and 2003.
Walsall
Walsall are also making history today as it's the first time in their 127 year history that the team from the West Midlands has played at one of the most iconic stadiums in English and World Football. The Saddlers' route to the Final has not been quite as convincing as that of Bristol City; narrow 1-0 wins over Rochdale and Sheffield United set up a Northern Semi Final match away at Tranmere Rovers who were just a couple points away from being relegated to the non-league. The match finished 2-2 after an 80th minute equaliser for Walsall. The Saddlers went on to win 5-4 on penalties to progress through to the Northern Final against high flying Preston North End. Walsall managed quite the upset in the first leg winning 2-0 away after two very late goals, they went on to get a 0-0 at home and book their place under the Wembley Arch for the first time in their history. Currently sitting 16th in League One, it's not been the best of seasons as just four points separate them from a relegation spot. Their form isn't as good either with just a point taken from their last three matches. But if there's ever an incentive to give your best performance, it's today.

Current Score: Walsall 0 - 2 Bristol City
And the teams are out! What an absolutely crammed stadium! The national anthem is about to be played. 0: Kick-off! The greatest cup competition in the world is underway! 5: Bristol definitely knocking it around a bit better. A chance falls for Freeman but it's a yard or so over the Walsall net. 15: End to end stuff here, not a cagey opening as expected. 16: Goal! Flint scores for Bristol City! Courtest of jebsticles 20: Bristol get numbers behind the ball and prevent a counter attack, great goal for the Robins. Flint must've jumped about eight foot to reach that height. James Chambers makes a great tackle on Agard to prevent a second. 24: Walsall looking good going forward, still very much in this. 29: Little involved once more as he finds Wilbraham in the box but the header is over. 42: Taylor almost scores a remarkable volley! Half-Time: Not a lot in it in the first half, Bristol definitely slightly better and deservedly have the lead but Walsall have come close on a number of occasions and could easily find themselves back in it! 46: Back underway! Can Walsall come back to level the match? Only time will tell. 51: Goal! Mark Little doubles the lead for Bristol City! Hits a header against the keeper and the rebound comes off his knee. 58: GOSH! Almost one back for Walsall, what looks like a cross somehow almost goes into the top corner but the keeper gets a fingertip to it and knocks it onto the bar! Unlucky. 64: What a save! O Donnel makes an excellent save at point blank range from Little's shot. Offside went up regardless. 77: Not long left now for Walsall to get back in this. MONDAY 26th DEC CHANNEL 4 CARD: WETHERBY 13:50 - Definitely Red 2pt Win @ 6.00, docdaneeeka docdaneeeka was very confident in his selection, as you’d have to be to go for a 2 point win at odds which most people (myself included) would have gone the each-way route, but Definitely Red delivered and then some with a very impressive performance to beat a number of very good horses. He travelled nicely throughout the race to come from the rear of the field to take the lead as the race developed, before quickening readily to put seventh lengths between himself and the next best. 10 pts profit. My horse to take from the race: DEFINITELY RED. He was rated 141 before the race and could rise to anything around 150, but for me that would be perfectly fair. He has made good horses look blunt, likely with some left in the tank, and it will be interesting to see where he goes next as he’s surely due a step up in class.
KEMPTON 14:05 - Churchtown Champ 0.75pt Each Way @ 19.00, docdaneeka In what was a very, very messy race, Churchtown Champ made a mistake early on when ploughing through a fence and never seemed to travel after that. 0.75pt loss. My horse to take from the race: MIGHT BITE. He was prominent throughout, helping to set an honest pace, and when other horses ridden with him began to fade away Might Bite found another gear and pulled clear in stunning fashion. He looked like he was going to win by 20 lengths before Daryl Jacob went far too hard into the final jump when the race was already won, causing the horse to hit the fence and fall horrifyingly. I’m not sure if anything can come of Jacob’s actions, but in Mick Fitzgerald’s words he “Went for a stride that wasn’t there” and I’m sure I’m not the only one who thought the horse was likely to be seriously injured. Luckily he got up and ran away and hopefully it doesn’t affect his confidence. He will improve at least a stone in the ratings for this race, and had he stayed on his feet I think it would have been even more impressive than Thistlecrack.
KEMPTON 14:40 - Yanworth 2pt Win @ 2.50, AirIndex Even if Alan King didn’t seem too confident with the quick ground and drop in trip, the betting public was and supported Yanworth consistently until the off. His early jumping was a bit rusty, and he was the first of the leading trio off the bridle, but he stayed really well and eventually ground down The New One to win decisively. 3pt profit. My horse to take from the race: CH’TIBELLO. Yanworth further enhanced his Champion Hurdle credentials, but I don’t think he has done anything we didn’t already know him to be capable of. Ch’Tibello, however, has quietly ran the best race of his career. He wasn’t quite up to this level, but watch where he goes next as he runs on any ground, could even improve for a step up in trip and it will be interesting to see how the handicapper treats him (anything below 155 and he’s laughing, in my opinion).
KEMPTON 15:15 - Thistlecrack 2 pt Win @ 2.37, smithmustscore The question of Cue Card vs Thistlecrack was finally answered, and answered in emphatic fashion with the latter now having the honour of being the first novice ever to win the King George. Thistlecrack jumped unbelievably cavalier throughout, I think any other horse would have fallen at least a couple of times, and never looked even slightly out of place. Cue Card tried to challenge him approaching the final bend, but the so-called “novice” laughed in his face, quickened his stride and put lengths between them in a matter of seconds. What’s more, we didn’t even seem to get to the bottom of him. Absolutely stunning. 2.74pt win. My horse to take from the race: TEA FOR TWO. He ran really well, even despite sweating beforehand. Depending on how you judge Thistlecrack he has ran roughly a stone better than his pre-race BHA rating.
TUESDAY 27th DEC CHANNEL 4 CARD: CHEPSTOW 14:00 - Dino Velvet 1pt Each Way @ 17.00, Patch270 Dino Velvet looked perfectly settled before the race, so to see him trying to pull the arms off Wayne Hutchinson as soon as they were sent on their way really surprised me. He was far too keen throughout, possibly showing his inexperience, and his jumping wasn’t up to scratch. Alan King’s novices are going well at the moment though so it’s worth keeping an eye on what happens next with him. 1pt loss. My horse to take from the race: DEFI DU SEUILL. Even despite his jumping in the final straight looking very nervy, he has blown them all away today and already looks an absolute star.
CHEPSTOW 14:40 - Viconte Du Noyer 1pt Each Way @ 26.00, docdaneeeka Viconte Du Noyer was ridden in the middle of the pack throughout, but he couldn’t go with the pace when the race started to develop. His jumping wasn’t quite up to scratch, and it’s possible the ground came up a little too soft for him. 1 pt loss. My horse to take from the race: RAZ DE MAREE. Okay, he was carrying the bottom weight in the race and having a further 3lbs taken off because of the apprentice on his back, but he flew home down the straight and at one point I honestly thought he was in with half a chance of catching Native River. It will be interesting to see how the handicapper treats him because he’s not a young horse by any means, but he looked in top form today and could still have another big race left in him.
CHEPSTOW 15:15 - Aso 3pt Win @ 2.75, docdaneeeka docdaneeka told us to loads our cannons on Aso today, and he justified that confidence with a very impressive victory. He was always going nicely and, under a confident ride from Charlie Deutsch, duly delivered with a comfortable victory in company he had too much class for. 5.25pts profit. My horse to take from the race: ASO. He has been on the up and up and up this season, running well to place in 2 Grade 3s at Cheltenham before today’s victory. He’s due another big race in graded company.
KEMPTON 15:30 - More Buck’s 1.5pt Win @ 6.00, smithmustscore More Buck’s set off on a nice early pace, jumped well and looked to have plenty left in the tank cruising into the final straight before crashing into the 2nd last. He was flat after that, as he was perfectly entitled to be, and couldn’t stay on for place money. 1.5 pt loss. My horse to take from the race: DOUBLE SHUFFLE. The first time hood and step up to 3 miles brought extra improvement from Double Shuffle. He did everything right today and won with some left in the tank. Keep an eye on where he goes next and how the handicapper treats him.
We hit the kind of purple patch we’ve been threatening to have for a few weeks, resulting in 14.99 pts profit on Monday and 1.75 pts profit on Tuesday, leaving us 13.84 pts up on 2016 at its end. This leaves us in a really solid position going into 2017, which hopefully we can build on. Thanks to all involved, and a big shoutout to docdaneeeka who gave us our two best winners over the festive period! You can view the results spreadsheet here.
There is something very definite pointing to it. In theories with extra dimensions of space (e.g. string theory), there are many ways for those extra dimensions to be curled up and compactified. And each different way shows up as different "laws of physics" in the local region where it applies. It's like the difference between ice/watevapor -- same underlying stuff, very different apparent properties.
For those following at home, "unitary" is physics-speak for "conserving information from moment to moment." And the answer is yes, inflation is unitary. Of course information might be dispersed far away, or hidden in other branches of the wave function, but that doesn't make inflation any different from other kinds of cosmological evolution.
I think BICEP2 will probably hold up -- but it's not unreasonable to be skeptical.
The biggest misconception is probably that the theory is developed by scientists saying "hey, let's add more universes!" The truth is that the extra universes are predicted by equations we developed for completely separate reasons.
Easy -- repeated, well-documented evidence for something that can't be explained naturally. Ghosts, angels, God coming down and scolding me. My first instinct would always be to look for a natural explanation, but given enough data and a stubborn inability to explain it without supernatural intervention, I would willingly change my mind.
I just try to be as logical and clear as possible, and make a real effort to understand my opponents on their own terms, rather than setting up a straw man to oppose.
There is something called the "WIMP miracle," which notes that a WIMP (weakly-interacting massive particle) has just the right interaction rate (that fixed by the weak nuclear force) to give approximately the right relic abundance of particles leftover from the Big Bang. Strong interactions would let all the particles annihilate away, while weaker ones would leave too many still around today. But the WIMP paradigm is under some pressure, as we haven't found the buggers yet.
I've seen only a little bit of it. (My wife, Jennifer Ouellette, does weekly recaps for the LA Times -- look for those.) I have the impression it's been quite accurate, but there will always be nits to pick.
I think math is discovered, in the sense that it couldn't have been any other way. But I don't think math is "out there" in some Platonic reality. I think that math is a set of principles, not a kind of "stuff."
I think it's something that is clearly true, but many people haven't thought about. And when they do think about it they might not want to admit it. But I'm on a campaign to spread the word!
Anything is possible. Right now I suspect time does not end, but it's certainly not something we are sure about. I used to worry about quantum fluctuations creating Boltzmann brains, but upon further thought I realized that was a mistake (at least in many reasonable scenarios).
Talking with Tim Maudlin over dinner, he came very close to converting me into a mathematical Platonist. But afterward I came back to my senses. Still not completely firm in my convictions, though.
Essentially, science is about describing the world, not passing judgment on it. Temperature, phase transitions, and supply and demand are all concepts that helps us understand what happens in the world. Morality is just a completely different endeavor.(Of course you can scientifically study how human beings actually behave — including what they judge to be “moral” — but that’s different than studying how they should behave.) Scientific claims can be judged by experiments, moral claims cannot.
If you can, go to a school with a great physics department, especially one that has graduate classes you can take or sit in on. Talk to more advanced students and grad students, ask them about all the steps. Take many classes. Do research if you can, and certainly get to know several professors well enough that they can write you letters of recommendation. Take the initiative, and don't wait for things to come to you -- follow the current research the best you can, and before you know it you'll be doing it yourself.
It's picture-independent. The Heisenberg and Schrodinger pictures are completely equivalent; anything you can say in one picture can be said in the other.
I'm not a credentialed philosopher, although I did minor in philosophy as an undergrad and took a number of classes (in grad school as well). I think the boundaries between certain kinds of physics and certain kinds of philosophy are pretty blurry, and pretty close to where I do research. I'll be submitting my first "official" philosophy of science paper soon, on deriving the Born Rule in many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.
There is always pushback, no matter what you do. I keep trying to work at the intersection of what is useful and what I enjoy doing, whatever that might be.
I wouldn't think of doing that until we understand life much better, and especially not until we are super certain that nothing life-like already exists elsewhere in the Solar System. Not in my lifetime, in other words.
Not that anyone knows of, but maybe I'm misunderstanding the question. Gravity is the curvature of spacetime. The topology of spacetime doesn't change near massive bodies, but its geometry does.
Hi Steuard! (I'm guessing that spelling is fairly unique, and you're the Steuard I know...)
Thinking that different formulations of QM are empirically equivalent is common, but it's not right. Things like Copenhagen aren't really coherent formulations of a well-defined physical theory. Real formulations of QM (many-worlds, dynamical collapse, hidden variables) will definitely make distinguishable predictions. We merely pointed out that they can be very important for big-universe cosmology.
I think it's a very interesting project. Certainly I'm in favor of basing metaphysics on our best physics. I worry that they go to far in reducing everything to relationships.
I think physics is actually crucial to understanding our place in the universe, at least indirectly. For example, my understanding of physics is what convinces me there is no life after death. That definitely has a big role in my desire to live a fulfilled and meaningful life while it lasts!
I'm quite happy with many-worlds, but I suppose some sort of hidden-variable theory (or something more dramatic that isn't even QM) would be next in line on my list. I have tried to understand Quantum Bayesianism etc., but I think they are trying to be instrumental rather than realistic about the physical world, which I have a very hard time swallowing.
Thanks! No debates lined up for the moment. After the World Science Festival and the Cheltenham Science Festival in the UK, I'll be happily staying at home and getting work done for a while.
However -- it would be crazy to imagine that those same rules necessarily applied to parts of the universe we can't observe, including parts so far away that we will never observe them. Still, our job is to come up with the best comprehensive understanding we can think of, and match it to the data. We're not anywhere near done yet, so there's no real need to worry about saying incontrovertibly universal things.
Hmm, I gave a long response to this but it seems to have disappeared. More briefly: no, nothing non-causal about it. It's just that there aren't really "fluctuations" in a stationary state until something finally "measures" it by interacting with it.
There are different versions. In the quantum many worlds, they are distinct parts of an abstract mathematical "Hilbert space." In the cosmological multiverse, the other "universes" are simply very far away.
By construction, universes tend not to interact, or we wouldn't call them separate universes. But you never know...
Actually not too often. I think misinterpreting QM in that way is more of a Seventies mistake. These days the favorite mistake is to invoke entanglement when it doesn't apply. Maybe we can blame Deepak Chopra?
The entropy of the early universe was actually quite low, because it was so smooth. Then again, the right answer is really "we have no idea how to correctly describe the very early universe, since quantum gravity will be crucial."
The limits on fifth forces are certainly not limited to 1/r2 forces. They explicitly put limits as a function of the range of which new forces can stretch.
Many. The search for gravitational waves. Search for dark matter. Hunt for new particles at the Large Hadron Collider and elsewhere. Looking for new weak forces of nature. Macroscopic manifestations of quantum mechanics. Testing the evolution of the dark energy. Probing the early universe via the cosmic microwave background. Searching for exoplanets, and for life.
You somewhat made that up, but it's all based on actual physics. There is an inescapable problem when we try to translate the wild implications of the equations of our best theories into ordinary English. But yes: there are potentially many worlds out there, each existing separately in the wave function of the universe!
It wouldn't destroy the interference pattern. It would just put the India particles into some particular state, which they would have when they passed through the double slits, and would still lead to interference when they were observed.
Not really -- I don't even think that's right. Not sure what the complete idea is, but there are many wrong (or misleading, or cheating) ways to derive a correct result.
A collider the size of the universe seems a bit extravagant. What we know is that, if you simply take current accelerators and scale them up, you won't reach the energies at which string theory should show itself until the machines are (literally) astronomically big.
Which means -- that's not the way to test string theory. We're trying to be more clever, but the theory itself is not very well understood.
Thanks! I've thought a lot about the different approaches, and I think they all serve different (but equally valid) purposes. There's no right way to do it; you have to think about the subject matter, the potential audience, and what you as a writer are best equipped to do. I can love a book by Roger Penrose that is all abstract ideas, then also love a book by Mary Roach that is all hilarious stories.
I have considered many things! But honestly, time is extremely squeezed, so it's unlikely I will teach a course online unless someone really pays me to. I do have a couple of courses with the Great Courses, with another one (on the Higgs boson) in contemplation.
